Maximinus II (309 - 313CE)

Maximinus II (309 - 313CE). Gaius Valerius Galerius Maximinus Daia Augustus, also known as Maximinus Daia and Maximinus Daza, divided the Eastern Roman Empire between himself and Licinius upon Galerius' death. He renewed persecution of the Christians after publication of the toleration edict of Galerius. He developed a passion for a wealthy, noble, intelligent and pious Christian girl, later to become St. Catherine of Alexandria, and when she refused his advances, had her beheaded and seized all her wealth. He entered into a secret alliance with Maxentius, the usurper in Italy, when Licinius sided with Constantine. He assembled a force of 70,000 men, but still lost the Battle of Tzirallum and fled to Nikomedia, then to Tarsus, where he died of unknown causes sometime around August of 313.
