Valerian I (253 - 260CE)

Valerian I (253 - 260CE). Publius Licinius Valerianus was proclaimed emperor by his troops upon the assassination of Trebonianus Gallus and became undisputed ruler upon Aemilian's assassination. His reign was marked by frontier troubles, and finally came to an end in 260 when he was captured by the Persian King Shapur I while negotiating a truce, shortly after his defeat at the Battle of Edessa in 259. He died in captivity sometime in 260 or 264.
