Magnus Maximus (383 - 388CE)

Magnus Maximus (July 383 - 28 August 388 CE). Flavius Magnus Maximus, also known as Magnus Clemens Maximus, Maximianus, and Macsen Wledig (Welsh) was commander of Britain and was declared Augustus by his troops who became discontented with Gratian's rule. He negotiated with Theodosius I and officially became ruler of Britannia and Gaul, but he attempted to invade Italy in 387 and was defeated by Theodosius at the Battle of Save in 388. He was later executed and Damnatio memoriae was decreed by the Senate.
